Escape to Vegas…

Our latest adventure took us to Las Vegas for a quick 3 day, 2 night getaway.  We hit the skies on a comfortable 8:30am flight out of Little Rock on Thursday, February 5th.  The flight home was direct from LAS to LIT, but we did have one quick stop at Houston-Hobby on the way over.  The timing was perfect, with Cassie’s birthday just a couple of weeks ago and Valentines Day just around the corner — two exceptional reasons to get out of town.  Come to think of it, this trip was an excellent prelude to a particularly busy month ahead.

Now, let me say that we set out with the goal of experiencing Las Vegas, minus all the “bad decisions” folks regret when they get home.  I can proudly say that we did not pull a slot, throw the dice, or anything of the like — not one single time.  What’s more?  We had a blast!

We took in a Broadway-caliber performance of “Phantom!” at the Venetian.  The show  is the Las Vegas edition of Phantom of the Opera, hand-crafted by Webber himself.  The show was quite similar to the original, with a few “contemporary” stylings.  The theater made you think you were sitting in a polished opera house, complete with box seats and posh upper crust patrons — err, mannequins  (not quite as convincing as those in Madame Tussaud’s across the street).  A huge chandelier falls just close enough to make you wince — which brings me to another story…

Our luck on this trip seemed like it could never run out.  We decided to rent a car, so we could take a quick side trip to see Hoover Dam.  Wanting to be a good steward of our finances, we reserved an economy-level car.  At the airport, the remorseful rental agent informed us that he was all out of economy cars and would have to upgrade us (I like upgrades!) to a mid-size.  “Pick any on this row,” he said.  We quickly passed up the PT Cruisers as made a dash for the Toyota Prius Hybrid.  Oh yeah!  We hopped in, found the key fob (wireless remote used instead of a traditional key) and hit the start button.   Nothing….   Hmmm.   This should be easy, because Cassie has this on her car.  Again… still nothing.    Ahh!  The battery is dead in the key fob, so you have to insert it into a slot.  Off we go!

Now back to “Phantom!” which is what got me on the topic of our luck.  We walk up to the first mezzanine, and the usher says, “We’re upgrading people tonight.  You can sit in the front orchestra section.”  Let me say that we had the best seats in the house.  About 10 rows back in the middle.  Wow!!

I can’t seem to keep this post in chronological order, but oh well.  Earlier in the day, we had checked in with our travel agent to get the information for our hotel.  We’d only been able to get a room a couple blocks off the strip.  Just for fun, I asked, “Can you get us on the strip?”  (I’d called days before and found nothing)  The agent quickly did some investigating, looked at me, and said, “Give me 30 minutes, and I’ll have you in Harrah’s.”    Works for me!  Now we are on the strip, next door to the Venetian for our Thursday evening show, and across the street from Caesar’s, our Friday night destination.

I’ve written six paragraphs and said little about what we actually did on our quick trip.  Here goes…

Thursday afternoon we walked, wide-eyed, up and down the strip, exploring the Venetian and a couple other hotels.  We ate lunch at Toby Keith’s Grill in Harrah’s.  After taking in “Phantom!” at the Venetian, we explored the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace and enjoyed a relaxing meal at the Cheesecake Factory.  Does anyone ever actually have room for cheesecake after eating dinner there?!

Friday morning took us to Hoover Dam, which was surprisingly busy for a Friday in February.  This is definitely a national landmark that everyone should experience once, and then mark it off their list.  I am so glad we took time to make the 30-mile-or-so drive out there and take a tour down into the dam, but I won’t feel compelled to join their loyalty club or make an annual pilgrimage.  Back to Vegas.

Everyone says that you have to experience a Vegas buffet.  Only the best, I say!  We have starved ourselves all day to prepare for an indulgent feeding experience at the Rio.  This was truly a massive palette of food from all corners of the earth.  I remember as a kid the first time I ate from the Mega Bar at Ryans Steakhouse.  Our meal at the Rio was the grown-up version of my childhood experience.

Friday night was a much-anticipated evening.  I escorted my lovely wife to Caesar’s Palace to see Sir Elton John himself in concert.  After many years at the Palace, he is leaving in April.  We caught one of his last concerts for this stint at his red piano in Las Vegas.  The house was packed.  What an amazing concert!  After the show, we walked over to the Belagio to see the renouned fountains.  We gazed at three awe-inspiring performances, then we grabbed our trendy hybrid and drove down to Fremont Street, just in time to miss the last run of the electronic canopy that runs three blocks and contains more than 12 million lights.

Saturday morning came quickly, and we still had a couple of stops to make for souvenirs.  Then off to the airport.  The flight back was bumpy, yet seemingly short.  Back to reality once again.  But I think Las Vegas has earned it place on the list of repeat destinations.

Oklahoma!

It has become our tradition to take a trip around the new year to celebrate our anniversary.  We thought that this year might be the exception; however, determined to find a nearby destination for a quick escape, I scoured the web, looking for locations that might perhaps still have a hint of Christmas!  We love the Christmas season!

I discovered ‘Downtown in December,” Oklahoma City’s Christmas celebration that lasted beyond the turn of the new year.  OKC was not a place that had ever crossed my mind for a trip.  But after a few clicks of the mouse and some slick negotiations on Priceline.com, we were set for a 3-day, 2-night trip to OKC.  We hit the road, heading west on Interstate 40, on New Year’s Day.  The trip was relaxing.  We explored the downtown region on foot.  They have done a fine job of restoring what is now known as Bricktown, and making it attractive for tourists and locals alike.  Upon recommendation of the hotel clerk, we sat down for dinner on the canal at Zio Italian Restaurant.  A fine choice, indeed.  I highly recommend the lasagna alfredo.  After dinner, we drove past the sombering Oklahoma City memorial and made plans to visit the museum and memorial on Friday.

We took it easy on Friday, sleeping in late and moving slowly.  That was the purpose of this trip.  We spent the majority of the afternoon at the OKC Memorial and Museum.  In addition to remembering those who died in the bombing of the federal building in the 90’s, the goal of the memorial and museum is to emphasize the senselessness of terrorism.  We both agreed that this is one of the most well-done museums/memorials we have visited.

After sorting through a pile of brochures, we picked out a shopping mall and set out on what became the most indirect route possible to get there from the downtown district.  After arriving at 6:00pm and finding all but one shop closed, we learned that the Quail Springs Mall just down the road was the mall of choice.  After Cassie scored a bargain purse at the “old mall,” we headed down the road to find a most-impressive shopping mall.  After partaking of classic mall pizza in the food court, we capped the night with a movie at the AMC theater in the mall.  I highly recommend “Bedtime Stories” with Adam Sandler.  Not a big fan of the actor, I can honestly say that this is the first movie in which Mr. Sandler actually impressed me with his acting.  I say that because I get tired of his style of comedy.  In “Bedtime Stories,” Adam Sandler demonstrated that he is a real person.  You’ll have to watch it to understand.

On Saturday, we experienced something that every young couple not ready for children need occasionally — the zoo…  On a whim, we decided that we were due for a trip to a zoo, so on our way out of town we stopped on by.   To put it in business terms, let me just say that every parent in that place was having personnel issues with their young ones.  I think we have marked that off of our list again for a few more years.

Drive Up to a Drive-In

As the whistle blows on Friday afternoon, consider jumping in the car for a road trip up US Hwy 65 to Marshall, Ark.  Kenda Drive-In is a blast from the past — a drive-in theatre complete with authentic window-mount speakers and elevated rows of parking.  Kenda Drive-In opened in 1966 and has been showing new-release movies most nights of the week for over 40 years.   You can catch the movie of the week at 9:00 PM, but be sure to arrive early in order to grab the best parking spot on the lot.  Enjoy easy access to concessions and restrooms throughout the show.  What’s more? The $4.00 admission fee will leave you with change to spare for ice cream after the show at another drive-in, Sonic!  Located directly across the road from Kenda, you won’t want to miss the treat before a late-night drive home.

I would be selling you short if I let you make the drive up 65 without telling you about another hidden treasure.  Located at the intersection of US Hwy 65 and AR Hwy 92 in Bee Branch, Ark., Cadron Creek Catfish House attracts hungry Arkansans from near and far.  As you step in the front door, prepare to grab a plate and pile it high with tasty catfish, chicken, hush puppies, cole slaw, and every fixin’ you can think of.  Enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet that is truly worth driving hours for.  Plan to spend around $15 per adult for your buffet and drink…dessert is included!  If time allows, why not stop at Cadron Creek Catfish House for dinner before your drive-in movie experience in Marshall.

Arkansas has hundreds of hidden treasures, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed by Arkansans and visitors from out-of-state alike.  Kenda Drive-In Theatre and Cadron Creek Catfish House are a perfect pair for hungry movie-lovers.  The next time you are considering an evening road trip, consider US Hwy 65 north of Conway, Ark., and prepare for a treat!

Bavarian Flavor in the Evergreen State

Leavenworth, Washington, is a quaint Bavarian village located in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state.  Having visited Leavenworth in 2004, I can vouch that the atmosphere is stunning.  The community features authentic shops and restaurants; each one is worth visiting.   Local vendors sell authentic German cuckoo clocks, Hummels, and other fine European items in a comfortable shopping district. As you walk down the quaint streets, you will find that each shop is worth a look.

A day of shopping in Leavenworth is not complete without a taste of Europe.  Be sure to stop in one of the outstanding restaurants and enjoy some sauerkraut and wiener schnitzel.  After dinner, enjoy a bit of culture by taking in a performance by local musicians.  The sights, sounds, tastes, and treasures of Leavenworth make this Bavarian-themed town so much more than a tourist attraction.

Nestled in some of the most beautiful mountains in the area, and just a short drive from Mt. Ranier, Leavenworth is a place I will be visiting again.

Destination, Destin

May is the perfect time of year to experience Destin.  The weather is perfectly moderate; the air toasted, yet breezy; the water cool, not chilling; the crowds, sparse and tamed.  The white sandy beaches and emerald ocean are picture perfect.  Perhaps this is one place that truly is as idyllic as the travel shows make it out to be.

Our 2008 trip was Cassie’s first beach experience…my second.  (My first was at Gulf Shores in the late 90’s.)  We stayed in the most perfect beach cottage, just across the street from the ocean.  Our Beach Street Cottage was a cozy second-story nook with one bedroom plus bunk beds.  We are not beach bums.  However, we soaked up the sun long enough to get more than our share.  The highlight of our trip was parasailing out in the Gulf of Mexico, and jetting across an inner cove on a wave runner.  Salt water flying in our faces, we “daringly” peaked speeds of 20 MPH on waves cresting probably much lower than we perceived at the moment.  I think it’s time for round two!

On top of the typical beach activites, we hit a most expansive outlet mall and also took in two movies during our 5-day trip.   Oh, and there was also the scrapbooking outlet, where we met a lady from Navarre.  (Navarre is now significant because our new friends from church grew up there and just moved up from Florida.)  On our way back through Mississippi, we stopped at an enormous shoe outlet where, of course, Cassie found herself a trendy giraffe-print purse.  We topped of our trip with a nostalgic dinner at a Shoney’s Restaurant, somewhere in Mississippi.
